Ep4. Idols of the Heart and Vanity Fair by David Powlison

In this fourth episode of the Berean Bookclub we change things us a little as we talk though an article by the late David Powlison: Idols of the heart and Vanity Fair

Powlison is a writer, professor and Biblical Councilor who has worked for Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation (CCEF) since 78'. 'Idols of the heart, and Vanity Fair' was first published in 91' then again in 95' followed by a revised version in 2013. It's an article about the inner workings of the human heart. In Powlison's own words ,he explores one weighty question: "How is sin more than behavior?". He focuses on two forces, our selves and the world around us, and shows how they push and pull our hearts towards the things they run after. Few things will cut your heart open and lay it bear on the table like this article - its fame certainly speaks for itself. It has the ability to help you make sense of our hearts and others', and run to God for the things we have not before.

This episode discusses the internal and external components of 'sin', the inadequacy of categories such as drives and goals, how all our motivations are ultimately religious, and two common mistakes we make in administering the gospel to an idolatrous heart.
